Reflection Prompt:
Reflect on what you plan to do to address the equity and ethics issues when applying technologies. You may share with us about what you have been doing by addressing these aspects and what you will change after learning in this module.
Description:
After having read different sources on the law and policies, I looked at what the state law had to say also. There is the law and there is the ethical or morale side of using the internet also. I did start to look at even more articles and sites on the topics to get a clearer view of what we can or can't do even in education. I also read about what a few districts have as policies in my area to see how the letter of the law and the intent are being applied today. Over all I was able to get the boundaries or parameters in my own head.
Impact:
I did know about the law and policiy but I also knew that they were followed closely because we are non-profit and educational. This made me stop and think about the issue again. I was interested in that just because you think it's ok, it's really not. often I think a culture forms and an attitude that then makes everyones thought process change. You would know it's not ' right' but you sort of convince yourself by necessitiy. I also was interested in the fact that many agency, museums, etc grant permission up to a point for copying thier work. I also didn't consider that a culture can make something acceptable. I thought it must be like the laws that needs society say it's offensive, but that isn't true in copyrighting. Some of the misconceptions were cleared up. It's not that we had it wrong but we did let the lines blur.
Intent:
As my agency gets into more technology, I want to start a group to investigate our policies so far and then in the future as situations come up. We do have an ethics review every year and I went to see what it said about technology and we don't have any specific policy yet. I am setting up a meeting with HR to see abouut putting a review group in place and who to talk to about setting up not only a review group but a way to handle questions. Every building does have a policy but I think one for the entire agency would make it clearer to everyone including the students.
